Mojotone’s Tweed Princeton Style Amp is based on the classic 5F2-A circuit which was introduced in 1957, and is the most widely known Princeton circuit. These amps have a wonderful negative feedback which gives them a smooth and balanced sound. Our Princeton style amp is a faithful recreation of the originals, which were rumored to be the most recorded guitar amps of all time.

Utilizing one 6V6 power tube and one 12AX7 preamp tube, it is a Class A circuit with a clear and chimey quality that is desirable for recording any style of music. To complement this 5 Watt amp’s output, we chose our Mojotone Anthem 8" 15 Watt speaker for its warm, crunchy, early breakup and articulate yet aggressive sound.

Our Tweed Princeton style amp has two inputs; low and high. The low input is is more tame with a slightly warmer overall sound, while the high input breaks up easier, and is glassier and brighter in nature. The amp has one tone control and one volume control and relies on the brilliance of the circuit’s inherent sound to provide the player with quality tone as the controls are tweaked. Enjoy the luxury of being able to dial in a punchy and clear sound at any volume without having to spend hours tweaking your EQ.

When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

Our beginner level kits such as the tweed champ and tweed deluxe include a manual. If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

This amp kit also comes with the following documents. Please feel free to view and/or download them:

Great First Build - Just a Great Amp

by Mike (AKA "Steggo")

I'd build many guitar pedals, but decided I wanted to graduate to amps - especially ones that are hard to find (much like what I started with on pedals). I needed a good amp to start with to really learn the ins and outs, so I went with the 5F2-A - it is a little less basic than the 5F1 as it includes a tone knob. The kit instructions and parts layout were all clear. The only issue I had was positive feedback from the output transformer that required swapping the blue/red wires from the transformer to the rest of the amp circuit. Once that was done, the amp just amazed me with the tones I'm able to get from it. I have to keep reminding myself that this circuit was designed in 1957 because it has certainly stood the test of time. I'll definitely be building more Mojotone amps in the future!

Beauty of 5 watts

by Dave -

My order was complete and arrived amazingly quick. I’ve ordered from Mojotone in the past and plan to continue my amp collection using their merchandise. What is really impressive is the sound and tonal quality these 5 watt circuits produce. Amazing is all I can say. I highly recommend these guys!!
