Blackface Vibro-Champ® Style Guitar Tube Amp Kit

After the original Champ amplifiers received such acclaim, Fender introduced the Vibro-Champ in an effort to build on the success of the simple 5F1 circuit by adding a tube-driven tremolo with speed and intensity controls without losing any of the Champ’s renowned tone. A unique-sounding and apt recording amp, the Vibro-Champ has been used by a wide range of artists, from Eric Clapton to Mac Demarco.

Lightweight and portable, the Mojotone Vibro-Champ style amp is perfect for the studio, practice, and even mic’d club gigs. Our Vibro-Champ style amp is a class A, 7 watt tone powerhouse with clear and articulate sound reproduction at low volumes. And no worries, if you want the raw and entrancing sound of a dimed out Champ, this kit will deliver without losing its inherent clarity.

Enjoy the smooth, natural compression of a single 6V6 power tube and the versatility of two inputs with varying output levels. Controls from left to right are volume, treble, bass, speed, and intensity. Nothing beats a well-designed and short signal path with a straight-forward control panel -- our Vibro-Champ amp is based on a circuit that has proven its worth for almost 60 years!

Mojotone reserves the right to change or substitute any and all of the parts contained in this amplifier kit without advertisement or notification to the buyer.  When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

heads up

"After scouring the web and finding that the OT wires might not be color coded correctly, I finally have the amp not squealing. It is pretty quite and sounds good thru a 15" speaker. After building the Princeton, the build difficulty is more difficult for this amp, I believe, because there are no instructions to follow. Only wiring diagram that was, on my OT, color coded incorrectly."

Small parts kit is top notch!

"Ordered the small parts kit and parts are all top notch. Sourced transformers, chassis, cabinet, tubes and speaker elsewhere to make a terrific Vibrochamp amp for under $700 ."

Switch the red and the blue for tone

"My second build after the 5E3 and I don’t think it was any more difficult. I have mine in a combo with a 12” and love it. I also had to switch the leads off the output transformer— switch the red and the blue. The piercing squeal existed at every volume except at 8, both above and below. Weird. 3 for 3 based on the current reviews, so it would be good to get the wiring diagram changed. Also, it would be nice to have working voltage on the diagram like on the 5E3 for testing. That said, all the parts were there and the videos for the Deluxe Reverb were a good reference."

Great practice amp

"This is a great practice amp! It has that classic Fender tone and chime. I made one modification by changing the fixed mids resistor to 6.8K to give it the same mids scoop of the larger Fender amps. I also built a custom pine cabinet and added a Jensen C12N speaker. This was my second amp build and I found it to be fairly easy but it did take two days to complete. I used the Princeton Reverb manual as a guide for the order of assembly. As another reviewer stated, the wiring diagram has an error in the wiring of the output transformer. You need to switch the output transformer primary leads to avoid having a high pitched squeal."

Great Little Amp.

"This was the first amp kit I've ever built. The process was really straight forward and the provided layout diagram was very helpful. I had to seek out a little assistance from the Mojotone Facebook page for an issue that I ran into, but the community, and the Mojotone team members on that facebook page were super helpful. This is a great sounding amp."

Highly recommend!

"This was my second build (built a Tweed 5f2a Princeton) and this amp sounds great. It is capable of a nice vibrato including that wonderful slow warble that I can't get enough of (it's hard to turn it off). I built this into a different enclosure (mojotone undrilled aluminum chassis) as I wanted to put it into a head. I also switched out the pre-amp 12ax7 for an Octal 6SL7. It sounds great with tons of clean head room. Pedals sound amazing as well, hit it with a dirty boost and it screams. Only point of advice for the build is be very careful in lead dress and wire routing. If it isn't good, you won't get a great vibrato out of it. Took me a little while to figure out how best to route everything into the chassis (specific challenge to not using the pre-made mojotone chassis for this build). Mojotone rocks and love the kits! Highly recommend!"

Worked perfectly

"I found an empty Fender cabinet at a pawn shop for $10, and bought it on a lark. After staring at it for a year or so, I decided to look up what would fit in it. It turns out it would fit a vibroChamp, so I started thinking about building one. I have decent soldering skills and a rudimentary understanding of electronics. I didn't use any special tools, and was able to build this kit in about 10 hours, though I was in no hurry. It worked perfectly right after I finished it, but I did need to go to the web with a few questions where the wiring diagram was not clear enough for me. As far as the sound, what is there to say? The tube breaks up perfectly when you push it past 6, and the Vibrato is lush, I just leave it on! I put in a 10" Celestion 10 Thirty speaker, and used my last NOS tubes that I inherited from my dad. If you want this thing to make more noise, just plug it in to a bigger cabinet, it will scream."
