Tweed Princeton® 5F2-A Style Guitar Tube Amp Kit

Mojotone’s Tweed Princeton Style Amp is based on the classic 5F2-A circuit which was introduced in 1957, and is the most widely known Princeton circuit. These amps have a wonderful negative feedback which gives them a smooth and balanced sound. Our Princeton style amp is a faithful recreation of the originals, which were rumored to be the most recorded guitar amps of all time.

Utilizing one 6V6 power tube and one 12AX7 preamp tube, it is a Class A circuit with a clear and chimey quality that is desirable for recording any style of music. To complement this 5 Watt amp’s output, we chose our Mojotone Anthem 8 15 Watt speaker for its warm, crunchy, early breakup and articulate yet aggressive sound.

Our Tweed Princeton style amp has two inputs; low and high. The low input is is more tame with a slightly warmer overall sound, while the high input breaks up easier, and is glassier and brighter in nature. The amp has one tone control and one volume control and relies on the brilliance of the circuit’s inherent sound to provide the player with quality tone as the controls are tweaked. Enjoy the luxury of being able to dial in a punchy and clear sound at any volume without having to spend hours tweaking your EQ.

When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

Great amp, great build

"This little amp sounds amazing and was a super fun build. Great for beginners and tone enthusiasts. The project want over once the circuit was done. I'm making my cabinet head for this beauty to live in. Another fun project on top of a fun project."

Super fun first project!

"My only precious experience was wiring new pickups in my guitar and a diy pedal kit. But I was able to put this together with only a little help! I received answers to my questions very quickly and when it was all said and done, this little amp sounds amazing! Highly recommended to anyone who has a little patience to go slow and not rush but finish with a really rewarding end product."

Aaron L. (5/5)

The little amp that could

"Love this amp! It was my first build. It was fun and pretty easy. Sounds great too. At low volumes I can't hear the difference between my hollow body guitar and the amp cause the reproduction is so accurate. Then if you want some distortion I just crank it to 7 or 8 and the breakup is beautiful. I think pedals sounds great on it too. But don't take my word for it, build one yourself."

Erik C. (5/5)

I'm not a guitar player.

"My son plays. I thought this would be a great project together. Ordered a 10 inch cut out then 10 inch alnico directly from Weber. I'm an experienced builder. (mostly solid state radio) He isn't. He did most of the work. It went together well. I'm glad we got the Princeton vs the Champ as there's a bit more room in the chassis making assembly a bit easier. The Princeton kit has a large printed visual layout but not step by step instructions hence the 4 stars. We used the Mojotone Champ step by step instructions as a guide. Upon power up we found we missed one wire jumper. Fixed that then had feedback but reversed the output transformer leads as noted in several on line groups. Son said it's the best sounding of his amps. I was tempted to source out all the individual parts which would save money but then likely get some parts of questionable quality. The Mojotone chrome on the chassis is buffed to a high lustre. I've built many kits as well as home brew designs. Mojotone has put this all together well. Excellent labeled parts bin included. If you're contemplating such a build, I'd highly recommend the Mojotone kit vs sourcing yourself. Highly recommended and I'd definitely order from them again. Lastly, don't cheap out on the soldering iron. and rock on!"

excellent quality, with good instructions, good support, and it is an easy build

"First, the Mojotone kit is of excellent quality, with good instructions, good support, and it is an easy build. However, I have my objections to a tweed Princeton, whether by Fender, Mojotone, Weber, etc. If you play single notes for bluesy leads only, or at bedroom volumes only, it is fine. It is not strong enough to play with any sort of a band, and at anything past polite volumes it is all distortion. I have tried every known trick to coax a bit more volume and headroom, but there is little change. For a very few more dollars you can build an 5E3 or 5E5A and have an amp with far more headroom, far more volume, and have a generally far more useful, flexible amp. I am building another now."

Great little amp and all high quality parts in the kit.

"This was my first ever amp kit build. I just ordered the kit without the speaker or cabinet. I wanted to use a Jensen C10Q (35W ceramic) which I already had. I was going to build my own cabinet but that fell through. I purchased a tweed cab from a builder with a 10" cutout. The Mojotone Tweed Princeton kit sounds amazing. Nice breakup about 1/2 volume, then just pure tweed overdrive all the way up to 12. I had a small glitch with the output transformer which was quickly cured by the tech at Mojo. The were very quick to answer questions during the build process. There are no step by step instructions, just follow the diagram and make good solder joints. Great little amp and all high quality parts in the kit."

perfect reproduction of a Fender Princeton 5F2-A

"First, Mojotone makes an excellent kit, indeed, perfect. Putting it together is easy, and you get a perfect reproduction of a Fender Princeton 5F2-A. That said, I am quite disappointed with the amp. It is a polite bedroom level practice amp. It is clean at low volumes, but at any volume much above acoustic guitar it is all snarl, with zero bass response and little treble. If you like midtone distortion for playing single note leads by yourself, that`s fine, but it is never loud enough to play with anyone else. For a few more dollars you could build a Deluxe 5E3 or Tremolux 5F11, much better, more versatile amps with broader tonal response that you can use for small gigs."

the quality is on point!

"I'd like to start with a cliche: "If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will spend its entire life believing it is stupid." As others have said, the 3 star review is wholly unwarranted given the low wattage and history of this amp. It's not meant to be a gigging amp (unless you happen to be in a situation where you can put it in an iso-box with a mic). What this amp IS, is a fantastic recording / practice amp. I did blend the 5F2 and 5F2-a circuits a bit by adding a choke in the power/filter caps. Other than that, it's all Mojotone parts. And as usual, the quality is on point! I'm pairing mine with a GA10-SC59 and could not be happier with the results!"

The customer service with this company is top notch!

"Great Kit, this is my first amp build and it was pretty straight forward. I had bought this 15% off during the Memorial Day Weekend sale and it is an awesome kit, love the small parts kit in the organized box and detailed drawings. I didn't receive a cabinet and they sent one out the same day I called, even upgraded it to a lacquered package. Had a no sound issue and received an email with troubleshooting tips within minutes, this helped me find out that i had no voltage at the 6v6 due to me not soldering the correct pins on the 5y3 rectifier tube (had the reds to 3/5 instead of 4/6 as in the drawing, I swear i checked all the wires 10 times before firing up the soldering iron, but these thing happen to us newbies. MOJO Tone was there to help. The customer service with this company is top notch! I would definitely recommend them to others with a 5 star rating in customer satisfaction."
